George Couros, in his TED Talk  “#Our Voice”,  shares his favorite quote, the one he says “drives him”.  What does this quote mean to you?

In what area of your life or what ways are you maybe heading towards irrelevance?  In what area of your life or what ways do you need to change?

How do you feel about change?  Name a time in your life when you first feared change, but on the other side of it, found things better because of it.

Education is always changing and we’re having to continue to learn as an educator. Just because we have a degree and maybe a Master’s, we are still learning as learning doesn’t stop when you get your degree. Education is always changing and we have to find what drives us. If we don’t we become irrelevant and not up to date in the current trends in educations such as with the curriculum.

In what area of your life or what ways are you maybe heading towards irrelevance? In what area of your life or what ways do you need to change?
It can be hard to keep up with the current trends in education or to find engaging ways to get students engaged such as finding games on tik tok. It’s very fun and engaging for the kids, but at the same time, it’s difficult to add on extra engagement opportunities to lessons that we have already planned in the curriculum. I find myself still finding those engagement opportunities, but making sure that I’m able to make it happen and it’s not adding too much stress onto me. At the beginning of each week, I create a to do list and I write down all the things I want to accomplish during the week. I find this a beneficial way for me to stay on top of things, but also stay ahead. I feel accomplished when I get my to do list done, but if I don’t, I feel overwhelmed and stressed that I did not get it done. I put a lot of pressure onto myself. I need to give myself more grace with my to do list.

At first, change is difficult to me because I jump to worst case scenarios or think about how this is going to impact me. With time to think about the new change, I’m able to come to peace with the new change and find positives in the new change. Last year, I got told at the end of the year that I will be changing grade levels for the next year. I would be moving from kindergarten to first grade. At first, I was devastated and stressed to move to a new team but also teach a whole new curriculum. But with that change, this year, I’m loving first grade and want to stay in first grade. This change has helped me become more flexible as a teacher, but also to me more experienced with the curriculum.
